My Naked Truth: I’m passionate about self-care. I want to break down the negative ideas that exist when it comes to building healthy self-care habits. It makes me sad that even today self-care continues to be misunderstood by so many. How often have you felt guilty when you have prioritised your needs? Women can experience this more than men given the caregiver role attached to them in society. Given the skewed and ‘wishy-washy’ ideas that exist when it comes to self-care it’s no wonder that many of us stumble around feeling exhausted and drained. There’s nothing to do other than sit back and enjoy reading†¦show more content†¦It’s not uncommon for many of us to think that we can only take good care of ourselves after we have reached certain milestones and goals. This concept is strange when good self-care is what helps keep us healthy and gives us the energy to achieve our goals. Self-care is about self-preservation NOT self-indulgence. 3. Myth: Self-care is ANYTHING that soothes you! Naked truth: Many of us have unhealthy coping strategies to ease stress (drinking too much, TV marathons, over eating, not exercising, etc.) and we can find these strategies soothing in the moment. These habits might help us unwind and have short term gains, but these behaviours are the opposite of self-care. Often it can be the activities that we don’t want to do (household chores, exercise etc) that can be best because they give us a sense of control. Self-care should not be harmful to your body, mind or bank balance. Self-care strategies should always support wellness. 4. Myth: Self-care is expensive! Naked truth: Self care is not about going on fancy holidays, buying expensive clothes, eating somewhere costly or visiting the best spa. It’s important to separate self-care from acts of privilege.
